Mondays Photography Inspiration – Arnold Newman

The camera is a mirror with a memory,

but I cannot think

– Arnold Newman

“We do not take pictures with our cameras, but with our hearts and minds.” Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman was a photographer known for his portrait of celebrities, artists etc….

What stands out about his work is the simplicity to his composition. Though his composition seems as though, loads can be learned from his technique.

At first glance, the rule of thirds, use of negative space, very creative subject placement are just a few of the tools he uses to create his environmental portraits.

He is known to capture the essence of his subjects no matter who they are. He often used the surroundings to add to the composition, making the viewer almost understand the person.

One of his very famous photograph is that of the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky seated at the grand piano.

With every one of his portraits, you will see objects that are around as though to inform the viewer of the subject’s profession.
